By accident we found out that wherever we are, or whatever she is doing, if you sing the first line of “If you’re happy and you know it” mallory will stop what she is doing to clap. This includes crying. How great is that?

Good Morning Miss Independent,
I am slowly realizing you are your own person with wants and needs that are not parallel to my own. Today you began making your preferences known. First and foremost, wearing a bib is childish and unacceptable. You will not tolerate the bib any longer. Also, you would prefer to wave bye-bye to daddy at the side door. Not the front. As I began to close the side door, to make our way to the front – you glared at me and made a beeline for the side as if to say “This is how it’s done, woman.” You climbed up the door and began fogging the window with your hot, steamy squeals of glee.
I’m going to be honest Mallory, this is only the first of many controversies to come down the pike. I’ll let you have this one as it requires no extra effort on my part so long as I pick your prom dress. An excellent compromise. Side door it is!

This morning while changing your diaper, you crawled across the room (naked) and smiled at me while peeing all over the carpet. I will tell this story every year on your birthday to anyone who will listen.

Today you were baptized by Pastor Dowd at the First United Church of Christ. You were wonderfully behaved in church and at the party afterwards. You wore mommy's dress and Aunt Becky became your godmother today. We're very blessed.

Dear Mallory,
Today you are 8 months old and I stand in awe of your accomplishments. This month you’ve started crawling, waving, pulling up on furniture, cruising (slowly), and saying “da-da.” You’ve outgrown your portable car seat and now ride facing the world in a shopping cart.

This month mom and dad have become vigilant in our effort to batten down the hatches. You find everything. Each and every piece of lint, string or cookie crumb – nothing escapes the eagle eyes of Mallory Grace. Of course you would rather play with all of the above than the piles of plastic, kid-friendly, APA approved, developmentally appropriate toys in the house. Who can blame you, really? The amount of fun to be had with Tupperware is limitless.

Our morning routine (I can’t even believe we have a routine, I never thought we would) includes some snuggle time watching “Breakfast with Bear.” During this time you like to do a bit of cover-surfing. You plow through the comforter like your own personal mosh-pit. Next Dad takes over with your breakfast (cereal) and then we wave bye-bye at the door.
You’ve been a busy girl, with playdates almost every week and cheering on cousin Emily at soccer. You made a new friend at your gym class named Vito. You are very cute together and of course spend most of your time together vying for the same toy. Cousin Candace had a nice lunch for the Waiting For You babies. You liked playing with Caelib, Mason and Carter. All boys, do I see a pattern here? Halloween was all tricks and no treats this year. Next year – lots of candy. I promise.

As we gear up for the holiday season, it’s so remarkable to think over the past year and how much we truly have to be thankful for. 10 tiny fingers, 10 little toes – You’re so much more than the sum of your parts. You continue to melt our hearts with your warm, gummy smiles and amazing personality.

Love,
Mama
